About this course:

Mechanical Engineering is one of the largest and most diverse engineering fields in the world. It is often referred to as the “Mother of Engineering.” Mechanical Engineering applies principles of physics to design, maintain, produce, and analyze mechanical systems. Knowledge of mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and energy is essential for studying this engineering field. Mechanical engineers use this knowledge in designing automobiles, airplanes, air conditioning systems, machinery for factories, and medical instruments.

Role of a Mechanical Engineer:

Mechanical engineers are responsible for designing and improving machines, equipment, and vehicles, and optimizing the manufacturing process to ensure efficiency. They work in various stages of production, from research, design, manufacturing, installation, to final operation. Their typical responsibilities include:

  • Designing cost-effective, safe, and durable equipment.
  • Collaborating with engineers from other disciplines to identify the necessary requirements for a project.
  • Simulating theoretical designs and making necessary changes based on results.
  • Discussing production-related issues with staff, suppliers, and customers.
  • Collaborating with professionals in engineering and other sectors.
  • Managing maintenance duties for equipment and machinery.

Workplaces for Mechanical Engineers:

Mechanical engineers have a wide range of employment opportunities in both the public and private sectors, and even abroad. Some notable fields of employment include:

  • After completing a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, graduates have the opportunity to work as second-class gazetted officers.
  • Junior Instructor positions in public and private Polytechnic Institutes.
  • Engineering, transportation, manufacturing, construction, and processing companies.
  • Utilities companies (gas, water, electricity, etc.)
  • Railways, aviation, automobile, and refinery industries.
  • Government agencies such as the Atomic Energy Commission, Bangladesh Shipping Corporation, and the Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research.
  • Power plant companies like BPDB, DESCO, DPDC, PGCB, EGCB, NESCO, and others.
  • Various government ministries and organizations such as Petrobangla, City Corporation, BIWTA, BRTA, WASA, etc.
  • Consultancy agencies.
  • R&D-based companies.
  • Civil services.
  • Armed forces.
  • Government agencies.

Job Titles in Mechanical Engineering:

  • Sub-Assistant Engineer
  • Assistant Engineer (depend to promotion)
  • Production Engineer/Supervisor
  • Plant In-charge
  • Maintenance Engineer
  •

Admission Requirements:

  • Minimum SSC or equivalent pass.
  • Minimum GPA of 2.00 in General Mathematics with at least 40% marks.
  • No age or year of passing SSC restrictions.

Higher Education Opportunities:

After completing a full Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, students can pursue a B.Sc. in Engineering, followed by an M.Sc. at institutions like DUET, IEB, and several private universities in Bangladesh. Students can also pursue their B.Sc., M.Sc., or Ph.D. abroad.

Curriculum:

The Diploma in Mechanical Engineering curriculum, accredited by the Bangladesh Technical Education Board (BTEB), includes both theoretical and practical components. The goal of the program is to equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills in Mechanical Engineering so they can work in industries, government organizations, and construction companies. The program duration is four years, divided into eight semesters.
